When Teaching Your Dog to Come Be the Headstrong One

by Tom Steffler

Dogs aren't actually stubborn. However, they usually don't understand correctly what they're supposed to do. To make this crystal clear, you need to establish the alpha status very quickly. Be ready to use patience and determination and firm force to achieve the behavior wanted. This can be very challenging when teaching the command "come".

It's natural for dogs to explore their surroundings. They will smell anything and everything, dig up, turn things over, and snatch little items. When doing a training session minimize any distractions by trying to be as far away from other people, animals, and voices as possible. It's a good idea to use an area that is clear of impediments or a room without small objects on the floor.

Be sure to take full advantage of any instinctive behavior you see. For instance when you observe the dog coming toward you, execute a voice command along with a hand gesture to encourage this behavior. Try to use a word and sign that you don't normally use during your teaching sessions.

Put the dog in a sitting position facing you. Reinforce the command of 'stay' as you move away. Use hand gestures and voice commands. Praise the dog if the behavior is correct. Do not reward the dog for an incorrect or partial response.

Repeat this as you continue moving back a couple more steps. If the dog runs to you before he should, give the "sit-stay" command and start again. If the dog doesn't want to come at all you may have to use a toy or a snack to coax him a little bit.

Some dogs may be reluctant or slow to learn. This is where you might need to do some leash training. The dog should be put in the sit position with the reinforcement of the 'stay' command. Start backing up, while letting the leash go loose and slack. A firm tug is needed upon the leash along with the appropriate voice and hand gestures, if the dog does not move.

For a dog that comes too early, use a long rope or lead and wrap it around a stake or a tree. If the dog starts to lift off early pull the leash as you verbalize the "stay" command. If there are no trees around, use a friend to help with the session. The negative part about using someone else during the session is the dog can become puzzled about who they should listen to. It's mostly best if they just focus on one teacher.

While teaching, consistence and determination is important. Dogs don't as a matter of course understand the usefulness of 'come' or any other commands. Screaming when the dog messes up or is a little stubborn is normally counter-productive. Establish your alpha position with tone of voice, body posture and willingness to wait for the dog to comply. Physical discipline or leading is a less helpful method.

Dogs respond extremely quickly to praise when they execute proper behavior. You need to be resolute and make sure that they come when you order them to.
